Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – May 13, 2025

In a high-profile diplomatic move, the United States and Saudi Arabia have signed a landmark $142 billion arms agreement, marking the beginning of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s four-day tour of the Gulf region. The signing ceremony took place in Riyadh, where Trump met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to finalize the strategic deal. The agreement includes the delivery of state-of-the-art warfighting equipment to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, aiming to strengthen its defense capabilities in the region. In a reciprocal move, Saudi Arabia will invest $20 billion in artificial intelligence research and technology development in the United States.

The massive arms deal, hailed by both sides as a “historic partnership for regional security and economic growth,” underscores the continued military and economic ties between the two nations.

“This is a momentous day for American industry and for the strategic partnership between our two great nations,” Trump stated during a joint press conference. “Our collaboration will create jobs, improve security, and open new doors in technology and defense.” Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman expressed optimism about the agreement, emphasizing its importance for regional stability. “This deal strengthens our defense capabilities while opening significant technological collaboration with American firms,” he said.

Trump’s visit to the Middle East includes planned stops in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Notably, his itinerary does not include Israel, a decision drawing commentary from political analysts and international observers. Earlier in the day, Trump was seen at a lavish business luncheon in Riyadh, where he was joined by top American executives, including tech magnate Elon Musk. The gathering was intended to bolster business-to-business cooperation and promote U.S.-Saudi economic ties beyond defense. The U.S.-Saudi defense agreement is expected to face scrutiny from human rights advocates and defense analysts, especially amid concerns over military involvement in Yemen and regional power dynamics.
