Pakistan Halts Visas for Indians as Tensions Escalate After Deadly Kashmir Tourist Attack

April 25, 2025 In a sharp escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan, Islamabad has suspended all visas for Indian nationals and taken several other retaliatory measures following a militant attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that left 26 Indian tourists dead. The attack, which took place near the popular hill station of Pahalgam, involved a group of gunmen who opened fire on a tourist convoy. Indian authorities have identified three of the four suspected attackersтАФtwo reportedly Pakistani nationals and the third a local Kashmiri. They allege all are affiliated with the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), though none of the accused have responded to the claims. Pakistan has strongly denied any involvement, calling IndiaтАЩs accusations baseless and unsubstantiated.
Following the attack, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed strict action. “India will identify, track, and punish every terrorist and their supporters. We will pursue them to the ends of the Earth,” he declared. He added that the perpetrators would face consequences far beyond their imagination.

Indian troops were seen patrolling a street in Srinagar on Thursday.

In response to the killings, India swiftly enacted a series of diplomatic and security steps, including suspending visa services for Pakistani citizens, closing the crucial Attari-Wagah border, and threatening to revoke the long-standing Indus Water Treaty. Pakistan, in turn, closed its airspace to Indian airlines, cut off bilateral trade, and ordered Indian military advisers to leave the country by April 30. It also reduced the diplomatic staff at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad to 30. The escalating standoff has sparked fears of a broader conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. Meanwhile, security operations in Kashmir have intensified, with over 1,500 people reportedly detained for questioning. Life is slowly returning to normal in the region, with shops and schools reopening after a brief shutdown.

In Jaipur, a relative of Niraj Udhwani, one of the victims of the attack, was present ahead of his funeral.

Indian police have announced a reward of 2 million rupees (approx. $23,000) for information leading to the capture of the suspects. Among the victims were a naval officer on his honeymoon, a local tourist guide who was the sole provider for his family, and a businessman traveling with his wife and childrenтАФmaking it one of the deadliest attacks in the region in recent years. Emotional farewells are being held across India as the bodies of the victims return to their hometowns. An all-party meeting in Jammu and Kashmir condemned the massacre, calling it a “barbaric attack.” However, concerns are now rising over the safety of Kashmiri students studying in other parts of India. Several videos circulating online show instances of harassment and threats directed at them. Though these clips have not been independently verified, student leaders have urged the Indian government to ensure their safety.

The political and diplomatic fallout from the attack continues to unfold, raising questions about the fragile peace in the region and the possibility of military escalation between India and Pakistan.
