Prahaar samachar | Bilopillia, Ukraine – May 17, 2025 — A tragic Russian drone strike has claimed the lives of nine civilians after a passenger bus was targeted in Ukraine’s north-eastern Sumy region early Saturday morning. The attack, which local authorities describe as a blatant war crime, has once again highlighted the devastating toll of the ongoing conflict. According to the Sumy Regional Military Administration, the bus was struck in the town of Bilopillia at around 6:17 AM local time (03:17 GMT) as it was en route to Sumy, the regional capital located near the Russian border. Four additional passengers were injured in the strike and are currently receiving medical treatment.

Preliminary reports suggest the vehicle was hit by a Russian-made Lancet drone, a weapon frequently used in precision attacks. Regional head Oleh Hryhorov condemned the strike, calling it “inhumane” and expressing deep sorrow for the loss of innocent lives. Ukraine’s National Police issued a strong statement following the incident, labeling the strike as a “cynical war crime” and accusing Russia of once again targeting a purely civilian object in blatant disregard of international law and humanitarian principles.
Russia has yet to officially comment on the incident. However, it previously claimed to have targeted a “military staging area” in the Sumy region — a claim Ukrainian officials have categorically denied, emphasizing that the victims were unarmed civilians on a routine commute. The attack occurred just hours after representatives from Ukraine and Russia met in Istanbul for their first face-to-face peace talks since 2022. Despite hopes for progress, the meeting ended without a breakthrough. Still, both sides agreed to a mutual exchange of 1,000 prisoners of war in the coming days — a rare sign of cooperation amid the protracted and brutal conflict.
Saturday’s deadly strike serves as a grim reminder of the daily dangers faced by civilians in Ukraine more than three years after Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022. As diplomatic efforts continue to stall, the human cost of the war continues to rise.
